Mosaic or glass tile is expensive (mine cost $5 per 12-inch-square sheet). I hired a plumber to handle that part of the job, and it cost me more than $500. A little bling and a few luxurious touches can give you a big impact for a small amount of money, and that’s a good place to start.
You’ll be sure to get what you want, and you won’t have to pay for the contractor’s shopping time. She recommends looking for certified Aging in Place contractors and contacting your local chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) for designer recommendations. HomeAdvisor’s detailed True Cost Guides take the guesswork out of budgeting.
If your bathroom is built on concrete with the main stack directly behind the toilet as ours was, stick with a conventional, floor-mounted toilet so you won’t have to chop out the floor and rework the plumbing under the concrete. Our bathroom is 6 ft. wide, so we added a floor-to-ceiling 2×6 wall at the showerhead end and a shorter 2×6 wall at the opposite end.
Work from those lines to get evenly spaced tiles throughout the floor.
Whether you are demolishing sheetrock or simply repainting, you always want to start at the top of the room. Sconce lighting at the vanity is the ideal way to get even lighting on your face, and installing it at eye level will help diminish unflattering shadows.
Don’t skimp on items like the faucet, sink or toilet, for example, because this is a highly utilized area and you want things that are going to hold up. Cheapest isn’t always best. Being able to visualize your project before it gets underway can help define your expectations of the overall project and illustrate how different design and layout choices will work.
Synthetic stones such as manufactured quartz or other brand names such as Silestone or Caesarstone can offer the look and feel of natural stone at a reduced cost and with less maintenance. For instance, adding a new tile bathtub surround or adding new fixtures will cost much less than completely replacing the entire unit. With a huge array of colors, sizes and patterns, the design choices are nearly infinite.
Hire an experienced, professional tile setter to get the best results and don’t forget that you need to clean and seal grout on a regular basis to prevent mildew growth. Get at least three written estimates that clearly define the project and what materials will be used. A good rule of thumb is to determine the cost of those items, double it, then withhold that amount from the final payment, until the contractor completes the punch list.
The biggest factor in the cost of this project will be the flooring itself, which can vary wildly in price.

Are you hoping to sell your home, but you know you’ll get a better price if you update the bathroom?
There are many ways to get around the expense of the bathroom, provided you plan cleverly and put in the effort yourself. Place painter’s masking tape over all edges you don’t want painted (moldings, tiles, wood, etc.) and cover furnishings, the tub and shower, etc. If you know a painter, you might be able to get trade prices if he or she is willing to help buy it for you.
What do you do if you want to replace, say the shower cubicle, but not the bath, but the colors are a mismatch? You can refresh a shabby linoleum floor by bleaching it to get rid of stains and grime. When you add in 25 percent for the contractor’s payroll expenses and 20 percent profit, that puts the contractor’s working labor per hour cost at right about $58.50 an hour.
So based on 40 hours of work (five days which is about what it should take) for these two employees a good total labor cost would be about $2,340.
I find I can get a very nice 30- to 36-inch vanity and vanity top for between $300 and $400.
